Guided Prayer

Depression and Emotional Heaviness

One · Pause

Be still for a moment. Breathe in slowly, and out slowly — three times. There is no hurry here, and no one is watching.

Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalm 46:10 · KJV

Two · Check in

How heavy is today, honestly? You do not have to make it sound better than it is.

If you are in crisis, please reach out now

In the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available day and night. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number. Prayer can support professional mental-health care, but it should not replace it.

Three · Scripture · King James Version

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · KJV

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Psalm 42:11 · KJV

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 · KJV

Four · Reflection

The psalmists spoke to their own souls in the dark and still said, 'hope thou in God.' Heaviness is not evidence that you lack faith. God is described as near to the broken-hearted — near, not distant, and not waiting for you to cheer up.

Five · Pray this

God, I am tired and heavy. I do not have strong words today. Be near to me as You promised to be near the broken-hearted. Hold me when I cannot hold myself, and give me enough strength for this hour. In Jesus' name, amen.

Six · Now in your own words

Tell God one true sentence about how you feel. That is enough of a prayer.

Seven · Private journal

What has been hardest lately, and what is one small thing that helped even slightly?

Eight · One practical step

Do one gentle, physical thing: water, daylight, a short walk. Then tell one trusted person how you are really doing.

Before you go

Prayer can walk alongside professional care — it is not a replacement for it. Reaching out for help is a faithful step, not a failure.
